The World Tourism Organization Awards Best Tourist Villages

The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has recently held its first annual meeting of the Best Villages Network, recognizing the importance of tourism in rural development, particularly for destinations committed to sustainability in all fields. The initiative aims to create more job opportunities, provide support for local businesses, and preserve local heritage.

According to the UNWTO Secretary General Zurab Pololikashvili, tourism is a powerful force for growth and opportunity, and the Best Tourist Villages initiative represents an essential step towards achieving these goals.

The program includes three main pillars: the Best Tourist Villages issued by the World Tourism Organization, which recognizes villages that are an example of rural tourism; the Best Villages by UNWTO Upgrade Program, which benefits villages that do not fully meet the criteria; and the BTV through UNWTO’s global network, which provides the opportunity to share experiences and good practices.

The 2022 best villages in the European Union include Zell am See and Wagerin in Austria, Sauris Zaher and Isola del Giglio in Italy, and Castelo Novo in Portugal, Rasinari in Romania, Boing in Slovenia, Rubet, Alquizar and Guadalupe in Spain, and Morten and Andermatt in Switzerland.

Moreover, the UNWTO will work with several villages in the upgrade program, including Krupa na Vrbasu in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kalopanagiotis, and Pissouri in Cyprus, as well as Otricoli in Italy. Additionally, Estebna in Poland and Ferraria de São João in Portugal are among the candidates for this program.

In conclusion, the Best Tourist Villages initiative represents a significant step towards recognizing and supporting sustainable rural tourism. By promoting responsible and sustainable tourism, it provides a positive impact on the local economy and contributes to preserving local heritage.
